hello Everyone!
So as many of you who attend CSUN already know, we are a college who isn't necessarily known for their school spirit. Some may say that it is because we are a commuter school, and it's hard enough for people to bring themselves to come to class! I myself am a commuter, and have to drive at least 30 minutes to get to school, and that time could be longer depending on traffic, so for me, if i don't have to drive out to Northridge, I won't. Another reason for the lacking school spirit may be because we don't have a coveted football team, which tends to bring students together more so than any other sport. I'm not saying there isn't any spirit at all, i myself own a bunch of CSUN clothes, and on the back of my car proudly have a 'California State University Northridge' decal on it. But what I'm basically saying is that we all, in my opinion, need to be a little more spirited = )
Here's the CSUN athletics website, so you can see whats happening with sports, http://gomatadors.cstv.com/ and maybe try to go to some events. Also, I'm giving you the Current Students link from the Csun website, https://www.csun.edu/currentstudents/.
Lets all try to get more involved! =)

I agree with Mary totally. CSUN is my second school and I do think the lack of spirit has a lot to do with it being a commuter campus. The last school I attended was located in a college town and was subject to probably the most school spirit legally allowed. The main differences as stated in the original blog, if you aren't supposed to be on campus you won't. Where as a big time college it kind of centers your life. The biggest sufferers of commuter campuses are sports teams. Almost all sporting events are held at night or on weekends, times when the least amount of students happen to be on campus. Also almost all commuter campuses are devoid of the big draw sports such as football. While football isn't the be all end all sport, it can be quite the money maker for a school. Programs like Michigan or USC rely on their football programs to bring in the big bucks it requires to have such advanced programs available for their students. Filling the coliseum every Saturday night(which holds over 90,0000 fans) plus jersey sales, etc.. all makes millions for the school. Again thought Pac-10 schools are not commuter campuses and are also notorious for being highly fan supported. I think that keeping up to date with the events going on campus is something I could do a better job of, and probably us all. We do have some dedicated athletes at are school. College basketball can be equally exciting to watch, plus it will only bring in more money for the school.

I completely disagree with Mary JB because having football, basketball or any other sport would probably not increase school spirit. What if our team looses? are whe then likely to have good school spirit? NO way!!
Because it is a commuter school students are just too busy. We just have two face the facts and accept that we are just doomed to have no school spirit.
GO MATADORS!!
As far as school spirit goes, I think that I am the least spirited person at CSUN. I do not own a CSUN sweater or t-shirt. I do not sport a CSUN decal on my car. I don't even know what sports we have available to watch or play. I would not know where to find a frat house or a sorority house for that matter. School spirit takes time and sometimes money. If someone were to give me a license plate cover with CSUN on it, I would probably sport it then.
Since we are a commuter school, I think that students are pinching pennies and time. It takes both pennies and time to purchase CSUN-wear. Have you ever sat in line at the bookstore? It is time consuming. When the commuters do sport CSUN gear, half of the time they are from an area so far away that they have no clue what CSUN stands for.
My opinion is that if you give students free stuff, they will probably sport it. If they have to stop and fill out a 15 minute paper to recieve the free item, forget it.

I also agree with Mary. The reason is because a lot students at CSUN don't live the area or even in the San Fernando Valley. This makes it harder for people to get involved with their campus. When people have to commute a lot they will have to need extra time to drive in traffic and get from one place to the another.
This is actually a serious problem for our school in a lot of ways, not only in the area of sports. I taught for eleven years at a traditional residential-style university, i.e., in a "college town," and the differences between that setting and CSUN are very noticeable.
Perhaps it can't be helped, since part of what CSUN does, what it exists for, is to provide commuting students with a good regional comprehensive university whose programs they can fit into their own lives, work schedules, etc. CSUN has to become part of people's lives in other ways, besides the traditional ways of football, etc.
But it is kind of dispiriting to realize that there are students who have been here three or four years who don't even know where to find a stairway in the building when the elevator breaks down (and they only have one flight to go up or down). There are many things here on campus that could work to students' advantage, if onaly most students knew about them.
Onaly?
Ugh.
